Chris Froome: Would he have beaten Pogačar and Vingegaard in his prime?
Luke Rowe believes the seven-time Grand Tour winner could've matched the current crop of cycling's superstars
Chris Froome has admitted he wonders how he would have fared against the likes of Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard at the peak of his powers.
Froome managed to win seven Grand Tours during his peak and whilst Pogacar's tally stands at just the two currently if he secures his goal of a historic Giro d'Italia-Tour de France double.
Although Froome has as many Maillot Jaunes on his palmares as both Pogačar and Vingegaard combined the now 38-year-old who's still active in the peloton at Israel - Premier Tech would've relished the chance to go head-to-head with the new generation of cycling stars.
Froome's former teammate and fellow Briton Luke Rowe thinks his old leader would've been able to cut it with the best of the best as the sport enters a new era.
"I think Chris at his peak would have stayed with Vingegaard and Pogačar in this year's Tour de France," Rowe told the Cycling Podcast.
"I'm not a big numbers man if you look at power numbers or whatever but when you actually see Chris Froome on the bike and in his pomp he just looked imbattable. He could do everything.
"He could time trial as good as anybody, he could climb with anybody, he could descend. He was just the complete package.
"I think he would have been fine. I think that the older riders would have been fine... Geraint Thomas, Chris Froome, Richie Porte, those guys at their best they could definitely stay with the younger guys.
"But I think as you get a little bit older it's just staying at that level for longer rather than necessarily improving. That's where the younger guys have got them because they're just improving all the time."
